Crystal heart by MrSide Crystal heart by MrSide
And here is my first deviation.

I made this with Blender wich is a free open source 3D content creation suite that can be found here : [link]

Making the heart wasn't really complicated once you know how to use the tools but the texture was really hard to make. I'm still not satisfied with the heart's shape but I am submitting it anyway.

I hope you like it. Comments and suggestions are most welcome. =P

Thanks.=P

Ho well, it was still in the time where I didn't knew how Blender was working so I mostly pressed random buttons until a cool result came out.^^'

I modeled the heart with the sulpt tool from a shpere. I applied it a mirror and a transparant. I put a voronoï texture on it and I played with the options. There is a light inside the heart and I think the hart as hitself an emit.

The rest are details and numbers. I could send you the blend file if you want or put a screenshot of the different settings on deviantart so you could see for yourself.

I like this! The reflection adds a lot to the picture. You should make a wallpaper version. :)

Thanks for the comment and for the suggestion, but I don't know if blender can make a wallpaper picture.=S Probably, I'll submit one when I find out.:)

Yes it does, you just need to change the values of the dimensions in the render tab ^^ Quite easy actually, when you know where to look for.
I like the overall idea, but I think some more work can be done on the texture, like for example a small grain on top of the Voronoi crackle, or a change in the lamp color (this yellow is really bothering me lol ^^). Well, all this are just personnal ideas, and you are free to follow them or not, but I thought I misght aswell say what I thought :)

Great, thank you for the info I'll check it out.=P

More work on the texture? Noo!XD Those textures will never let me go. What do you mean by a grain? Adding an other texture or raising the noise level? Thanks for your impressions on the lamp, I'll remember it for my next works.=P

OK, what I mean by a grain...Yes, it is another texture, I suggest distorted noise (I'm rendering right now a test to actually fit a grain on a surface, by the way ^^), and you would decrease the size of the features and map them slightly to normals. That way, you can have either a depolished glass texture (with some more work, I'm afraid ^^) or just something looking like scratches (what I am trying to make right now ^^)

I discovered something today that you might want to use. You Voronoi crackles give the impression that there are several layers of crackles on top of each other, and I believe that you actually added only one. You might want to keep it that way, but if you were looking to give the feeling of only one layer, trying using the brightness value in your texture panel. It will make the smallest features disapear in the background color of the texture. Of course, this works like magic for normal mapping, but if you want to use the same texture for colors, my guess is that it might mess things up...

For your lamp, I would really suggest to change the color to blueish, that would maintain the overall feeling. But maybe some red lighting might give something interesting...to give complementary feelings...

My last question : which version of blender do you use ^^ ?

Hi again!

Ho man, such technicalities.XD Okay, first, thank you a lot for all you suggestions. It is really motivating to have such great advices right on my first deviation. I'll try to do as you suggest and see the results but I'm on blender since only a few weeks and I don't know it that much, so I'm a little lost and/or confused.^^' I'm using Blender 2.49 but I think I would like to upgrade to 2.5 since the interface seems a lot different and that I'm not that used to the 2.49's one.

For the light, in fact, the heart was initially part of a larger scene with an other lamp, a candle to be more accurate. But after some work on the heart I decided to post it alone on deviantart since I found it cool.:) I also thought that it, the yellow light, was giving it some depth. I'm still working on the said scene that I intend to put here once finished but... it's a lot of work and I don't know when it will be done.XD But I agree with you, I think that a red light could make an awesome result.=0

What else... hm... you were right, I'm only using one layer. I think that it is all. I wish you good luck with your rendering and thanks again for the comments and suggestions. =P
